Barcodes are quick, but sometimes the best scanner is the one you have with you. QR Codes let customers and field technicians easily use their phones to read numbers, specifications, and web lookup important details on the go. That’s why we make QR code labels for many of our clients.
QR code labels are able to display more information in a smaller area because they use vertical and horizontal space for data. This is done through small squares. You can scan QR code labels at any angle, making your labels easier to scan with your phone.
QR Code Uses
These labels are great for hundreds of different uses. They make it really easy to send customers to your website so they can learn more about your products or services. Restaurants often display them so customers can look at the menu on their smartphones.
They have so many other applications to fit your needs. Realtors will put them on signs so people can see more information about the property for sale. At Coast Label we have made durable QR Code labels designed for abrasive environments, outdoor equipment with strong sun exposure, high-temperature applications, cold-temperatures, waterproof situations, and more. The trick is to build the label from the ground up which means using the correct materials adhesive and inks for the given process.

Weatherproof QR Code Labels
Many of our customers need QR code labels that will endure extreme conditions. Whether the labels will be out in the sun or exposed to moisture, it’s important for the labels to remain scannable. At Coast Label, we can help you design weatherproof QR code labels that will endure extreme cold, heat, moisture, and UV rays.
QR Code Sticker Sizes
There’s no standardized QR code sticker size, but choosing the right size for your QR code labels will affect their functionality. You need them to be big enough to scan, but small enough to fit where you’re placing them. For most smartphones, a 1-inch by 1-inch QR code sticker is the smallest scannable size.
To determine the best size for your QR code stickers, you need to know the distance they’ll be scanned from. The basic formula for determining size is minimum size (in inches or centimeters) = distance (in inches or centimeters) / 10. Essentially, that’s a 10:1 ratio. A QR code scanned from 12 inches away would need to be 1.2 inches by 1.2 inches. QR codes scanned from farther away will need to be bigger.
How QR Codes Work
You’ve probably seen QR codes popping up all over the place, especially in an age where touchless scanning and processing are so necessary. With only a smartphone, your employees or customers can scan the QR code to quickly complete a task. Most smartphones come with QR detection in the camera app, but some may need to download a QR code scanner.
QR codes (or quick-response codes) have been around since 1994 and are similar to barcodes. Because they store data in both vertical and horizontal bars, they are capable of doing so much more than a simple barcode.
Some of the benefits of QR codes include:
- Touch-free scanning
- Update and change information with dynamic QR codes
- Contain more information than a typical barcode
- Scan without special equipment
- Create customer engagement
- Can be placed almost anywhere
- Extremely versatile
QR Code Sticker Shapes
QR codes are square, so it’s perfectly acceptable to print square QR code stickers. But, if you’re looking to really make your QR codes catch the eye, you might consider choosing a unique shape for your QR code stickers.
At Coast Label, we have a vast die-cutting library from our many years in business. From circles and ovals to stars and scallops, we can manufacture your QR code stickers in practically any shape you need.
QR Code Sticker Design
Getting the most out of your QR code stickers depends on good design. Here are a just few things you’ll want to keep in mind when designing your QR code stickers:
- Choose the right materials and adhesive for the placement of your QR code stickers. If the QR code sticker tears, it won’t be scannable anymore.
- Include a call to action or explanation for your customers. QR codes are so omnipresent these days. Give your customers a reason to use yours.
- Add a pop of color. QR codes no longer have to be black and white. You can design your QR codes with your brand colors to catch your customer’s eye.
- Keep your QR code stickers consistent. Chances are, you’ll need different QR code stickers for different promotions. Keep the design consistent so your QR codes are recognizable.
- Add a frame around your QR code to match it to your label design.
- Add your logo inside the QR code.
- You can encode more information by using a URL shortener, such as Bitly.
- Make sure to test your QR codes. Once you’ve generated your QR code, test it several times to make sure the code is scannable before printing.
